Capstone Ministries started celebrating the “World Weekend of Prayer” for orphans and vulnerable children in 2007. From the beginning we did this in partnership with the Lake Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenya.
In those first few years we observed it as a day of worship only with prayers by children and a sermon noting the circumstances of vulnerable children around the world.
We have continued to observe the day every year on the first weekend in June on the same day that churches around the world pray for vulnerable children from the US, Europe, Africa, Australia, etc.
In June 2012, we expanded the program to a two day event. Saturday focused on activities, classes on hygiene, HIV and the Bible. Sunday was a day of worship in which the children from 7 different Lutheran Sunday Schools participated in the worship service. They prayed, sang, performed dramas and poems, recited memory verses and read the Scriptures of the day. Several even helped Pastor Dan with the sermon. More than 350 children participated in this two day event hosted by Rarieda Parish–a rural Lutheran congregation in the Lake Diocese. In 2013 we plan to observe the weekend on the first weekend in May so that more Lutheran Sunday Schools in the US can participate.
